Direct Debit basics

How long does a Bacs Direct Debit take to appear?

Setting up a mandate, seeing it in your bank app and receiving payment confirmation are different stages. Here is what to check before a bank switch.

Allow time between setting up a Direct Debit and relying on it for a bank switch. A completed checkout does not mean that money has already been collected.

Which stage are you waiting for?

There are four different things to check:

  • authorisation: you have approved the Direct Debit
  • bank visibility: the instruction appears in your bank’s list
  • collection: the bank payment is being processed
  • confirmation: the provider knows whether the payment succeeded

These stages do not necessarily happen together. An instruction can be visible while a payment is still processing.

How long does Stripe take?

Stripe’s Bacs documentation gives a typical confirmation time of four business days for an existing mandate, or up to seven business days when collecting a new mandate.

That is the time for the payment outcome, not a guaranteed date for the instruction to appear in your banking app. Weekends and bank holidays affect business-day calculations.

Select Correct shows setup progress separately from payment status. Finishing the authorisation steps does not turn a processing payment into a successful collection.

Why is it missing from my bank app?

Check the bank account used at checkout, the provider’s confirmation and your bank’s Direct Debit list. Do not assume that a missing upcoming payment means the instruction has failed.

If the details do not match or the instruction is still missing, ask the provider or your bank through its official support channel. Keep bank account details and sign-in links out of ordinary email.

What should I do before switching?

Check whether your bank’s offer requires a completed payment, how many instructions it needs and when those conditions must be met. A processing estimate does not extend the offer deadline.

The Current Account Switch Service FAQ says new payment arrangements created in the seven working days before the agreed switch date are not automatically transferred from the old account. Ask your new bank before adding a last-minute instruction.

Before choosing a switch date, use our active Direct Debit checklist and review the bank’s offer requirements.
