A monthly payment is not always a Direct Debit. The payment method matters when a bank switching offer asks you to transfer a particular number of instructions.
Who controls the payment?
With a Direct Debit, you authorise a company to collect money from your account. The company gives you notice of the collection. The amount can be fixed or change between payments.
With a standing order, you instruct your bank to send a fixed amount on a schedule. You manage changes to that instruction. Rent and transfers to your own savings account are common examples.
A recurring card payment uses your debit or credit card details. It is a separate method, even if the payment leaves the same current account every month. MoneyHelper explains all three payment types.
Does a subscription count as a Direct Debit?
The word subscription describes what you buy, not necessarily how you pay. Check the actual payment method rather than relying on the service’s name.
If an offer requires Direct Debits, do not count a standing order or card payment unless the bank explicitly allows it. Read the bank’s conditions and ask it about anything unclear before paying for another service.
What happens during setup?
You give the collecting company permission through its authorisation process. Pay.UK’s setup guidance also explains that you should check notices showing the amount and collection date.
An instruction or setup confirmation is not proof that a payment has been collected. If your switching offer needs payment history, check your bank transactions as well as the instruction list.
What protection applies?
The Direct Debit Guarantee provides a refund route through your bank when a Direct Debit payment is made in error. It does not replace your agreement with the company or settle every disagreement about its service.
